OVERVIEW
My eBay Experience
During my 9-week internship, I collaborated with engineers, business teams, and senior product managers to perform end-to-end product management. My work included conducting market research, participating in cross-functional syncs, and drafting PRDs and user guides. In addition to product management, I also worked on design, making complex data systems easier to use for diverse internal user groups.
Managed and designed an API onboarding tool end-to-end
Design
Revamped the design of 5 features to improve usability
Research
Produce a 15-page e-commerce fraud trend analysis to inform product strategies
Documentation
Compile 3 user guides for feature onboarding and adoption
REFLECTIONS
My Main Takeaways
I’m incredibly grateful for my time at eBay and for the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with such talented engineers, product managers, and business teams. This experience allowed me to apply my product management, design, and data science skills to real-world risk systems and helped me grow as a product thinker and collaborator. Here are the most valuable lessons I took away from this internship:
Be Proactive in Learning
When I first joined, I was completely new to risk data platforms. Terms and systems like feature engineering, pipelines, and risk monitoring felt overwhelming at first. I tried my best to keep up by asking questions, doing research, and learning directly from the engineers and analysts I worked with. Over time, those concepts started to make sense, and I was able to make better product decisions and contributions to the team.
Balance User Needs with Engineering Effort
I learned that the design that feels “best” for users isn’t always the most worthwhile or practical for engineers to build and maintain. Working in a huge, complex data system showed me how even small changes could ripple across many components. By reusing design system components, making small but thoughtful improvements, and creating designs that could accommodate multiple use cases, I found ways to improve usability while keeping things practical for the engineering team.
Initiative Matters, Even as an Intern
Being an intern doesn’t mean only following directions. I tried to think beyond my assigned tasks, writing down new ideas and perspectives as they came up. A few of these were brought up in meetings and even adopted by the team. Speaking up helped me realize that fresh perspectives, no matter where they come from, could make a difference.
